Cynical Tech Poetry

The Network Engineers Lament
by Richard Freeman

When the half-wits have hyped, the Lies have been wrought
and palms have been greased so the lies will be brought.
I'm the poor bastard who has to make it all work.

When the 'way of the future' is a descent into hell
and nothing quite seems to live up to its sell.
I'm the poor bastard who has to make it all work.

When the system integrator is too stupid to breathe
and despite all his ignorance he's still believed.
I'm the poor bastard who has to make it all work.

I have pondered antiquities, protocols like IP
which have been pushed, hyped and revered since 1960
I'm the poor bastard who has to make it all work.

When the protocol stack's bloated with overheads and Kludge
and the Networks performance is slower than sludge.
I'm the poor bastard who has to make it all work.

When the PABX clock is doing it's own thing
and the PABX tech has run out of string
I'm the poor bastard who has to make it all work.

When Voice over IP is clogging a link
and the Email traffic is making it stink.
I'm the poor bastard who has to make it all work.

When a bug has been found and the firmware's been patched
I'm the one who's up all night stopping it crash.
I'm the poor bastard making it all work.

I have seen the damage that lightning can bring.
burnt, smoking hardware that will never more sing
I'm the poor bastard who has to make it all work.
